    Best Practice Suggestions

I have said this before but...
Let me know something has happened when I have added a product to my basket.

    Coupons Coupons Coupons...
Personally one of the biggest turn off items I see when shopping are coupon codes for products especially when they are on the actual product pages. How do I get one of these mysterious codes?... Since I don't have one than I know someone else is getting a better deal than me. No thanks I'll look elsewhere for my very own better deal!

Consider taking a look at you site with other screen resolutions and browsers. I try to do this myself as much as possible to keep everything looking the same. When you go to your homepage is it in a nice border but then when you click to go shopping all of a sudden everything is thrown out to 100% off the screen or is it all of a sudden is aligned to the left. This may be very different on a wider screen than what you are used to looking at. Most computers these days are coming with wide screens and when the site starts moving all over the place it is a bit confusing.

This looks like it might become a good "Sticky" topic - keep the suggestions rolling in and I'm sure Rick won't mind me sticky-ing it :)

One of the best things we ever did for our site....

Giving customers a quick and easy way to figure out shipping cost without all of my information. For under $40.00 you can buy a shipping calculator module. Just do it, because unless you have a reason for hiding them don't.

I don't want to create an account....Please make it optional because there is no reason for you keeping my information after I get my product.

Could you give an example of the page you are talking about?
We are doing something similar, but only for products that have a MAP. For example here: http://www.redflarekits.com/pc/MH-30...Mountain+House

I think he is refering to product pages that have an input field for an instant coupon, but do not give the customer the promo/coupon code. You page actually gives the code needed to obtain the discount.

Exactly... I think your page is just fine since the code is there and I'm sure this is your legal way around the MAP. We also have several companies that do this. I'm not sure if you are looking for a comment on the page or not but I am going to PM you one anyway :)

It took me a while to find this thread today, perhaps we should move it to the 5.5 area?

Regardless though, this thread inspired this blog post: http://www.practicalecommerce.com/bl...actices-Review

And by the way, we have now added our phone number to our global header :)

                    Re: Best Practice Suggestions

I completely agree with your comment about images. It has to be one of the largest problems for most e-commerce sites but is the single most important. Without the touch and feel of something it is necessary to help as much as possible. Of course if your a coffee seller it's a whole new ball game because I am still awaiting my scratch and sniff monitor.

Together with the phone number in the header it always amazes me to go to a contact us page and not find every way possible to do so. A simple form for just an e-mail is a bit sketchy. Why can't I have your complete address as well?

Please feel free to fix my typos and bad English in comments on this thread. I will try and slow down a bit when ranting :)

I agree about the contact page as well, nothing makes me lose faith in a company as them being unwilling to share their physical address.
                      Thanks,

                        Re: Best Practice Suggestions

The best practice suggestion I have is to learn the best practices. Go to other stores, see what they do. Put yourself in the customer's shoes and try to find products and do everything but place the order. You will learn a lot!
Also, read blogs. Ecommerce and conversion blogs can provide a ton of insight about what works and what doesn't.

Best practice? Splash Logo page with an enter button. What a waste of time and effort - who's the brainaic that thought that one up. Do I want to enter? Well DUH, I came here in the first place, of course I want to enter! Or maybe I just wanted to make sure that the link I clicked on actually went to your website and not something else...perhaps I was thinking it may be like a twilight zone thing and your link may actually take me somewhere else that I never would have imagined? Well hey, I thought I wanted to enter but now that you asked, I have to decide if I really want to enter or not...hmmm.........

(can ya tell those really tick me off?)

I can see Wall Mart stopping people before they enter through the front doors and asking them - "Hey, before you go inside I need to know...do you really seriously want to shop here?"

If someone stopped me before entering Walmart and asked me if I really wanted to go in, I might just think about it, turn around and go home...
