VC Customer Import with Groups Version conflict

Having a little issue and wondering if anyone can help.

Working with a site that relies heavily on monthly customer imports to keep a current subscriber list, and availability groups to manage the content available to the subscribers. While looking around for a better solution than importing and then assigning groups (which is a pain) I came across the free VC module Customer Import/Export with Groups. This would be perfect for my needs, except there's a problem. The export portion of the VC module installs and works like a beauty. The import portion, not so much. When I try to install the import module, I get this error: "The module: Viking Coders Import Customers with groups is already installed". I suspect since this module is a modified version of the stock import module, Miva is mistakenly thinking the two are the same. Normally I would just update the stock import module with the newer VC one, but sometime between PR-7 and now the stock module had its version updated to 5.8001 while the VC module's version is 5.501, so no love there. Next step was to try to remove the stock module from the store, but it has a refcount of 1 and won't let me uninstall. I was able to successfully install the VC import module locally, by altering the refcount in the module table and uninstalling. This is not an option with the store I'm working on, I don't have access to the tables. My other thought was to use Toolkit to run a mivascript update of the tables from a page template, but alas- The store doesn't have Toolkit. I'd contact VC, but I'm afraid I don't have time to wait that long as I can't imagine they would consider it a priority to update the version # for a free module.

Thanks for reading my wall of text, I hope your eyes aren't bleeding too badly. Keeping my fingers crossed that someone will have a clever solution.

The drive to school is always good for thinking. I do have FTP access to the server, think I'll write a small php script to do my dirty work. Still open to other suggestions however.

      Hi Bryan,

The module shouldn't conflict with the regular miva import. I don't believe Import/Export modules don't need to be assigned to the store, look under store utilities -> Import - it should be there automatically.

If you're looking to maintain automatic access to price and availability groups, try the Copernicus Membership SuperMod. You can setup membership templates that can expire after an amount of time, you can setup product purchases that automatically assign customers to groups, assign customers to groups by a signup code, points, etc. Very flexible for time/membership based sites.

      Best,
      James

There is an import customers into availability and price groups feature in the price group manager. It will assign existing customers to the groups you specify in the flat file. If you don't need all the other features in that module, it would probably be overkill. http://www.emporiumplus.com/1AA00226.html

It shouldn't, but does. From the mvtrocks.com product page: "An import module, built from the Miva Merchant v5.5 PR7 Limited source kit, modified to include Availability and Price group import columns". I take this to mean that they took the stock LSK import module and modified it, which I'm sure worked fine until sometime later when the stock module was updated to version 5.8001. Now I'm unable to update the module (lower version number on the VCcustomerimport) or uninstall because of the reference count.

          Bill and James,

First off, thank you for your responses. Secondly, I've looked at other solutions including price group manager and the membership mod. I ultimately decided against both of them, as they are way more than I need for this store. I get sent a monthly subscriber list in excel format. This list always replaces all of the current customers, so there's no need to set subscription lengths, as the new import wipes out the previous list. What I need, and the free module provides (after I get it installed on the store) is a way to import and replace the customer list, and at the same time assign them to the appropriate availability groups. Anything else is just adding steps.

Thanks again gentleman! I'll get it figured out, always do. =)

BTW "they" is "me". I've updated the distribution to have new module file names and module codes to avoid the conflict. Download the update from MvtRocks.com and you should be good to go.
