You can upload a 2000px by 2000px image however since you'll never need a image size that big it will eat up a lot of disk space. You cannot delete the original image, even if it is never really being displayed on the site.
As a best practice I would upload the zoom image size as your original and then let image machine create all the smaller images sizes needed across your site.
