Link directly to an inventory variant?

Is it possible to be able to link to a product variant? In other words, can we use Javascript to load a product and based on the url have it show a particular color variant?

I'm pretty sure I've done that before. IIRC, you can put a Product_Attributes parameter in the URL, which will pre-select a particular option when the page is displayed. At least you could at one time; I don't know if I've tried this in newer stores that use the Attribute Machine.
