    UPS Real Time Server problems?

    Since last Thursday, we've had quite a few orders come through with no shipping charged (labeled Estimated Shipping) which is usually the case when our server can't connect to the UPS server for whatever reason. We use the Viking Coders UPSŪ Custom Integration module and while its a bit old (v5.080 vs the latest is v5.090) I'm not convinced that's the problem because it is so random, works most of the time, randomly doesn't.

    We just had another couple of orders come in without shipping and when I tried to duplicate the problem with the same product, sure enough, it wouldn't calculate shipping, then 5 minutes later it was fine again. Because of the randomness of this issue, I'm guessing that UPS is having issues with their server or is it possible that we're having issues with ours? We are on a dedicated server with Hostasaurus but are not experiencing other similar problems.

    Does anyone have any information on possible UPS server issues? Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

    We are having the same exact problem here. I came into the forums to see if anyone else was having a similar issue and you are!

    We are running Ver.5.082

    It does work intermittently but that's all.

      Would be nice to confirm others that DON'T use the UPS Custom Integration module are having issues because while it seems to be a UPS issue, its also still a possibility that it is a module issue.

        Re: UPS Real Time Server problems?

        Hello,

        We have run into this issue with a couple sites that are getting this error when trying to generate shipping labels:

        Unable to open URL 'https://www.ups.com/ups.app/xml/ShipConfirm': Error establishing SSL connection" ,

        Those clients are using our UPS online tools module, not Viking Coders' UPS custom integration module. It's intermittent as well. The client was able to generate one label today then couldn't generate additional labels. We have a feeling the issue with a non responsive server on UPS' side.

        Regards,

          Re: UPS Real Time Server problems?

          I've been able to reproduce the issue manually. You can actually test it from any computer that has a working 'openssl' installation by using the following:

          openssl s_client -connect www.ups.com:443

          At that point, what happens seems to be completely random but most often results in one of several failures. What should happen is you see something along these lines:

          Code:
          CONNECTED(00000003)

          The portion where you see "GET /ups.app/xml/Rate" near the bottom is me typing. What follows is their server responding. That is what you want to see. However, sometimes you see the --- and then the connection closes before you can send anything. Other times you don't even get all the SSL headers.

          I have a feeling they may have recently introduced some kind of rate limiting, perhaps a poorly thought out attempt at implementing a security measure to prevent single IP addresses beating up on their rate servers as part of an attack. The websites that have reported this issue so far tend to be busy from a UPS perspective, such as either by having a lot of orders or by having a minibasket that shows rates at all times once you plug in your zip code, or a combination of both of course.

          We're going to attempt to contact them but anyone who has a UPS rep and ships a lot might also want to give that a try too; more voices might get their attention faster.

            Thank you Rafael and David.

            I will get a call into our UPS rep to bring this up.

            You guys rock.

              Seeing this sometimes too:

              Code:
              CONNECTED(00000003)
              depth=3 /C=SE/O=AddTrust AB/OU=AddTrust External TTP Network/CN=AddTrust External CA Root

              verify return:1
              depth=1 /C=GB/ST=Greater Manchester/L=Salford/O=COMODO CA Limited/CN=COMODO Extended Validation Secure Server CA 2
              verify return:1
              depth=0 /serialNumber=1009116/1.3.6.1.4.1.311.60.2.1.3=US/1.3.6.1.4.1.311.60.2.1.2=Delaware/2.5.4.15=Private Organization/C=US/postalCode=30328/ST=GA/L=Atlanta/streetAddress=55 Glenlake Parkway/O=United Parcel Service, Inc./OU=Transaction Services J2EE
              verify return:1
              write:errno=104
              Which basically means a connection reset was issued by their side. Typically you only see that when a server is overloaded or they want to block the request.

                Ditto to the thank you to Rafael and David. Good job tracking this down. We have a few modules (this being one of them) that I'm just waiting to implode and cause me major grief one day and I'm glad to know its not going to be today. Now if we can just get UPS to get it together. It does seem like a rookie blunder for a company like UPS to pull...

                  They're not always quite up to speed when it comes to ecommerce. I heard a funny story at the conference when the topic of 'rate shopping' issues came up; UPS thought the ideal solution would be to add an additional page to checkout where you first choose the shipping company you want to use before you are presented with rates because 'most people' would just want to ship with UPS and not be confused by other options.

                    Oh man...classic. But so "big company" mentality.

                    On the other hand, if we could just get Google to quit showing search results from our competitors...you know, why confuse everyone with all those silly choices?

                      I've seen the same problem on two stores, both using the Viking module, one an old version, and the other we upgraded to the latest version, which didn't help. David (as he showed above) helped determine it was the UPS module as well. I'm just adding in my voice to point out that upgrading the Viking module doesn't resolve the issue, as it's not a problem with their module or with Miva themselves, from what we can tell.

                      One site is fairly busy, the other isn't. The failures seem intermittent. From my logs generated my the Viking module, it looks like it fails about 1 in every 15-20 calls.

                            Can you try changing the URL in the Viking Coders UPS module

                            from https://www.ups.com/ups.app/xml/Rate

                            to https://onlinetools.ups.com/ups.app/xml/Rate

                            and let me know if that rectifies the problem you were having.

                            Regards,
                            Rafael Buelna

                              Re: UPS Real Time Server problems?

                              I've made the change and checked to see if it works and it does. It may be difficult to tell if its the cure all for a while because we don't seem to have had any problems today so far, traffic and sales are a little down from yesterday. David's thought that it showed up when a lot of requests hit seemed to ring true, we saw that the times it happened were when we had 2-3 orders coming in at a time vs when it was a slower part of the day with individual orders spaced out a bit more.

                              I'll keep my eyes peeled and report back if we have any issues (and will check in within a few days if we don't).

                              Thank you for all your help and efforts.
