Template Data Feed - Too Many Crawl Issues

I would normally approach Bill at Emporium Plus for the following but he is unavailable until November. I'm running into a large amount of crawl errors with Google all of a sudden. All the errors seem to be related to products with variants such as:
    HTML Code:
    http://www.charlottes-saddlery.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=Hlmts_1040_S_Green&Category_Code=Schooling-Helmets&Store_Code=COS
The first part of the product template code for the feed is:

    Code:
    http://www.charlottes-saddlery.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=%product:code%&Category_Code=%category:code%&Store_Code=%store:code%%......
I sure would appreciate it if someone could give me a heads up on what might be wrong. Is the problem that the template code might need to be tweaked? Thank you.

Is this your Google Sitemap feed?

Since variant products are non active products, there is no direct link to them so you don't want them to appear in your feed. My guess is you need to either restrict non active products from showing up in the feed, or change the settings so the variant products are not showing up in your feed.

Thank you for your reply Brennan. Yes, that is the question: how to restrict them. I keep looking at the mod settings but do not see a way to restrict the output. I'm hoping someone has run into the same issue and can clue me in. Obviously, there has to be a way.....

        Tim,

In order for the Template Data Feed module to pull in variants, they either have to be active items or added specifically to the feed. By default variants are non-active items, are yours active by chance? If not, it is worth a look at the actual sitemap feed setup.

On a side note, we have seen aggresive Googlebot activity on a number of stores recently. While your specific case may be caused by different reasons, there has been a noticeable uptick in activity lately.

A bit of a side track here, but why would you want to list variants? Wouldn't it be better to funnel all links through the master product?

I.e., if i had Red, White and Blue "My Pony" T-shirts, seems that I'd be better off from an SEO position to have all three queries point to "My Pony" and not "My Pony White", "My Pony Blue", etc.

(BTW: Speculation here... I'm not saying it is or it isn't...just seems odd...especially if the variants are like size related.)

TDF export for google should be active only. Do not select the option to export inactive products. Then see the FAQ on how to export for the google feed to include variants. The link is to the master but the variant info is include. See the example feed in the FAQ. Yes, I am off line until Nov 3.
