When did MIVA Merchant double its license fee?

Today, I received a note from Rick Wilson telling that my license expires on May 31.

He said "Normally, as long as you renew prior to your expiration date, your annual renewal fee is only $995. If you let your renewal lapse, then the price goes up to $1,995 if you choose to renew after it's expired. "

WTF? Last year, my "normal" renewal fee was $349 ($495 if i was late).

When did the "normal" pricing double?

This license fee is only if you choose to host elsewhere, a retail license. If you host with us or a certified hosting partner, there's no such fee and our fees both directly and through those channels aren't changing or changed.

However if you want to host say at Rackspace, that tends to include much higher support costs for us when issues come up and we've altered our fees accordingly.

Huh? I never knew that self-hosting came with any MIVAMERCHANT support. Why don't you simply charge for support of self-hosters? Those merchants that don't need your help should not be subsidizing those that do.

I will make a point of calling you guys first when we have issues instead of trying to solve it on our own.

It's both support and updates. Our testing requires supporting a multitude of external environments the way we do it now. The choice was this or to stop offering a self hosted platform (from our perspective).

It is worth noting that if you don't pay, your store DOES NOT break in any way. It just becomes ineligible for updates, so you'll essentially be "stuck" at whatever version you're on when it expires.
