Be aware before diving into Miva 9

Well, I have to confess... I was lured in by the brand new, long awaited, bright shiny toy that Miva rolled out to us last night.

Once I parachuted off the cliff and did my update this morning I discovered that was in a fantastic place full of wonderful new features.

Is it different than before? Of course. Is it better? It has to be. Otherwise, I'm confident that Miva would not have invested the massive amount to time, effort, and $$ that Miva 9 so obviously required.

Because this is the cusp of our busiest time of year, I'm a tad bit regretful that I went ahead and updated rather than waiting for 2015 to roll around but it was impossible to resist. What kid, after all, doesn't want to open his gifts as soon as they arrive?

Fortunately, I've only updated the smaller of our two stores. The other will have to wait until I get through the learning curve.

So now I'm going to dig into Miva 9 to see what Rick and Brennan and Zeph and the gang have created for us. Will there be murkiness, tumult, confusion, and lots of questions? No doubt about it.

I'm equally certain that there will always be someone to answer my questions and help be toward a better understanding of what is going on.

Change is not always easy. This change, as others have pointed out, should probably be delayed if you have a crushing rush of business right around the corner.

Since there's no rope for me to climb back onto the 5.5 cliff, I have no choice but to dive right in and learn Miva 9.

    Kudos to Miva.

My only criticism is that I wish you hadn't dangled such an irresistable carrot in front of me this close to the Holiday Season.

Yup, that's what I've said. Please, please, please if you are a busy store - resist the temptation. If you must play, go grab a dev site. It's the safest place to learn and look at all the new shiny pretties.

We are empathetic with this concern and had to weigh it with the counter argument that many of our stores can use the new features to increase sales. In addition completed software doesn't "age well" when sitting on a shelf.

Additionally we would've added more to the Upgrade Process if we could've but alas that's "installed" software.

So we're banking on the video being in the admin for over 6 months along with multiple Webinars and a long public beta to provide people the guidance they need to make the best decision for their business.

Leslie, how do you "grab a dev site"? It would be awesome if Miva offered a "test site" where people could actually see and use the new interface before actually making the jump. Other shopping carts (like 3dcart, Bigcommerce, etc.) will set up a new store for you to test out for free, no CC required. I've done this myself to test a lot of other offerings out there and it was nice to see what the competition to Miva offers. I'm hesitant to make the jump to Merchant 9 right now, but if I could test it out first that would alleviate a lot of the nervousness.

        Thanks,
        Eric

We offer this too but in a different (and I think "better" way). You can have a permanent free dev site no CC required (the perm part is the "better" part) but you can't use it for actually selling anything. Go to www.miva.com/videos click on Developers and Create Free Dev Store.

That's great. Thanks, Rick! I'll give it a go.

Yep, It's a great tool to learn the new version without the fear of pushing the shiny new buttons. It's much more fun when you can break things and not have to worry about it right away :) You can even install a dev version of toolkit. Thanks Miva!

I set up a dev store. While the interface is totally different, everything seems to be there. It will just take a little getting used to. I know Rick has said everything will work perfectly when upgrading from 5.5, but I'm still a little worried something will "break". I'll sit back and see how it goes for others, and upgrade in January.

On a side note, Jim, you have some great prices on K-Cups! I'll have to place an order next time I need some. Too bad you don't have Dunkin' Donuts, but I think you can only get them in their stores...

                Thanks,

Re: Be aware before diving into Miva 9

Just my starting thoughts - and I am curious what others think.

1 - I really like the look and feel.
                  Its clean and pleasing

2 - I hate the amount work required to get anything done.
I really seems like the actual work flow was not thought out. Just adding a product is much harder than previous versions. Its all on one page, which means I get to scroll and scroll like never before.... I confess, I like the old links at the top - step 1 - done, step 2, done - etc etc.

                  - and man, selecting the countries to display on a new store - wow - talk about difficult. Sure, it works - but it has added much more work. It just seems like the look and feel was everything, but the work flow for admin was not well considered.

Maybe its me cause I am just jumping into this?

                  Others?

As I go thru the setup -
Deselecting countries to display is time consuming, but looks good. Then you click to the customer fields, and it looks like you simply pulled in the old setup. Its much easier - but ugly. Odd.

Re: Be aware before diving into Miva 9

                      Catalog...

It does not seem possible to select ALL products, then unselect some, then delete the remaining.
You can UNSELECT all, or enable selecting. But you can not select all.

Also - it appears that the catalog page simply displays ALL products based on the filter - meaning, its not paged.
So, if you have 5,000 items in your store, you have one really long scrolling page to deal with, and since the spacing between rows is large, it makes it even longer... I only have about 1500, and since I can't select all at once, its a real pain to scrool and select, scroll and select, scroll and select - and on and on.

M9 supports keyboard shortcuts, select all and unselect work well using this method. The Advanced Search is also a nice feature that helps narrow down lists.

And if you forget to use the select all feature you can just highlight the first item, shoot down to the bottom item, hold the shift key, click on the bottom item and it will select all that way as well.

Neither of the above seems to work when using a mac.

There is no obvious way to select all.
Yes - I can "enable" all and I can "deselect" all - but I can not select all.

Removing a ton of countries - one at a time - seems like I must be missing something... I hope I am.

On a Mac, Command-A should select all countries displayed. I have seen situations where if you have hit update or performed an action, it is necessary to refocus by selecting the first item before using a keyboard command, but it should work. After using Command-A, if you hold down the Command key you can deselect individual countries.
