Shipping Method Rules Vs. Shipping SuperMod

It looks to me like the Shipping Method Rules native to Miva will do everything that the Shipping SuperMod can do. It also looks easier to use. So I'm considering abandoning the Shipping SuperMod. Has anybody else done this? Any trouble? Any reason to keep using Shipping SuperMod?

Re: Shipping Method Rules Vs. Shipping SuperMod

The native Shipping Method Rules can do nearly everything that the Shipping SuperMod can do except a few cases.

I deprecated the Shipping SuperMod a few years ago without any regrets and have greater peace of mind.

The Shipping SuperMod was a great value in its day.

Re: Shipping Method Rules Vs. Shipping SuperMod

OK. I've abandoned the Shipping SuperMod. It served me well for years and, indeed, it was a great value.

I'm struggling with the shipping method rules. I use price table based shipping and I have tables for the continental US, AK and HI, Canada, Europe and Japan, and Australia. I also have a table for Digital Downloads that doesn't add any shipping charge.

I just can't seem to get the shipping method rules to present the shipping options I want to present. I only want the Digital Shipping option to display on a few select digital products, yet it has to be available to all countries. It looks like the only way I can do that is to manually limit the available shipping methods on a per product basis for ALL my products. In the Shipping SuperMod I could approach this from the opposite direction. The default setting was that the free Digital Download shipping option was NOT allowed. Then I could go to the few digital products I had and allow that option for that product specifically. Is this possible in this system?

Is there any manual that explains how to make good use of the Shipping Method Rules?

Have you checked the Reference Guide? www.miva.com/referenceguide

The rules worked the same both in PR8 and Version 9, so you could check both manuals.

Thanks, Rick. I did learn something by reading the PR8 manual. However I still don't see a way to do what I would like to do. Maybe it isn't possible. I'd like to have a shipping method that is NOT allowed by default but that I can make available by editing the shipping options in the product.

I am assuming that digital downloads have no product weight.

Can you allow the shipping method for digital download for products that have no weight?

For example: Restrict to Total Weight: 0.00 - 0.01

Re: Shipping Method Rules Vs. Shipping SuperMod

              Matt -

Our shipping rules take the opposite approach as the Shipping SuperMod did. Shipping SuperMod allows you to include a product for a shipping method while we force you to exclude all products you don't want to see it.

The best way to do what you need is through import/export. You would need to setup your shipping method and exclude all products except your digital download products from your "Digitial Delivery" Shipping method via a csv import.

The big downside to this method, is as you add new products you need to make sure to remember to exclude the digitial delivery shipping method.

This functionality is on our radar to re-look at this year and there is a good chance we will make some updates to make what you're trying to do easier without having to use import/export.

Re: Shipping Method Rules Vs. Shipping SuperMod

@matt The shipping rules allows you to exclude other methods. So if the digital download method is available you should be able to exclude all others.

@brennan When you re-look at the functionality please take into consideration how E+ Shipping By Product By Zip Code allows you to set global rules then overide them at the Category, Sub-category and Product levels. It allows me to quickly change shipping rules for an entire category without having to update each product. Or, become very granular and overide the shipping rule for just a singular product.

@alphabet - That seems like it would work. I haven't added weights to my products, but we might in the future. The problem with your other suggestion is that I would have to limit the shipping methods for EVERY problem, which brings me to Brennan's solution. I can see how Brennen's suggestion would work. However, I'm quite nervous about importing all my products and overwriting the current settings. Maybe I'll test out a small handful of products first...

Not sure if this has changed after bugfix 11995 but I was told it was all five digits, comma separated. And you can't do ranges, ie 070-080.

It should just be a comma separated list of zip codes you want to restrict that shipping method to.

Well I am trying to set up rates for ups zones so for example Zone 2 contains zips codes in these ranges (first 3 digits) 150-158, 263-265, 430-449. Can this be done?
