    email address export question

I have to assemble an email list, partially made from the orders my store has gotten on our site. I've figured out how to batch export all our customer data into a file called orders.dat, but my computer (imac) doesn't know how to open that file. My ultimate goal is to use Direct Mail to assemble the list from the export. So how should I go about doing this?

the .dat extension just means it is a data file. The field itself is a delimited text file. You should be able to open the file using excel. The delimiter is either a comma or a tab depending on your settings.

It should just be a text file, but you'd be better off opening it with a spreadsheet program that can discern the various fields and put them in columns; then you can easily extract the email field. If you have Excel, or Google Sheets (free web-based app), that should open it.

I use a date range search in Manage Orders and then simply copy and paste everything into an excel spreadsheet. Email addresses fall neatly into a column. I do this every week.

In 9 it's one step easier, there's a CSV download button on the manage orders screen (and most other batch screens as well).

You do have PERMISSION to send email to them, right?

You did use a double-opt in system before sending an email to them, right?

You have a business relationship with anyone in your Manage Orders so you do not need opt-in. You do need to offer opt-out.
