    Order Email Timeouts

We send 3 emails after a purchase. Randomly, the last two (only) time out (per Miva error messages at invoice screen). This went on last year for a few days then stopped and now has started up again. (since last week)

Sending the emails manually (from the admin) hasn't reproduced the issue.

It's so random it's been very difficult to troubleshoot, like yesterday it was 5 out of 75 orders. It's nothing external as the mail server logs never show the last two even trying to be sent and then failing.

Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated. We're stumped.

    Re: Order Email Timeouts

Some mail servers have throttling of connections based on source IP address; i.e. too many connections from the same source in too short a period of time and additional connections are temporarily blocked. Some also have a maximum simultaneous connection limit per IP. Either could cause this type of issue.

Typically these two settings should be disabled for localhost (127.0.0.1), at at least raised to a higher number than what the internet-exposed services permit, but sometimes that setting may have not been put in place. Then what you end up with is if too many sites on the same server send mail in too short a period of time, or are sending mail at the same time, the source IP could be temporarily blocked. Sending a three message burst would contribute to the issue if that's what is actually occurring. It's worth checking out with the support folks for wherever you're hosted.

      Hi David --

Do you think something like this gets logged?

Depends on the software but typically you'd have a log entry like "localhost postfix/smtpd[5573]: warning: Connection concurrency limit exceeded: 13 from 127.0.0.1" or something similar.

The logs don't show anything unusual, other than the Emails not being there. My NOC guys have been working on it since day one, too.

The primary domain and the store are different servers, maybe sending the Email through the primary domain server will be a fix.

          Thanks for your help.
