    Create a product with options

Have a custom doll item with 5 options to complete it. Each option has 3-8 choices.

    Body: 3 choices
    Hair: 8 choices
    Eyes: 8 choices
    Lips: 3 choices
    Misc: 3 choices

In the product first have Body then have the 3 options. After doing that for each item when I generate variants and it is giving me 1728 of them.

What am I doing wrong? Why can't I just give each choice an inventory? Each hair only has one available. Once someone picks that hair then it should disappear. The rest are unlimited options.

Re: Create a product with options

Am I supposed to contact support about this kind of stuff? Because I am have been stuck on various parts of the varient/attribute stuff for good while now. Have made posts a couple weeks ago with no help from miva. See miva helping others out. This is frustrating and making it so that I will never build a site for anyone else ever again. Just trying to help a friend who is just starting out. It should not be this hard to figure out.

Variant Inventory is based on each of the 1728 choices resulting in a product availability of ONE.

So, a doll with, wide body, red hair, blue eyes, thin lips and freckles is ONE specific item (variant)
a doll with wide body, red hair, blue eyes, thin lips and mole is ANOTHER separate variant.

I don't think you mean to track inventory at that level (maybe, but it doesnt' sound like it).

As for help, yes, you can contact Miva directly for this type of help. The forum is usually more suited to 'custom' development work as you get the benefit of input from peers AND support folks as well.

You should only configure the I under attributes for things you want variants to be calculated on.

In addition Pamela's book at apps.miva.com provides step by step instructions for this and it's a free download.

          Thanks so much.

But where does the the inventory for the individual options like the pink option under hair? HERE is the page so far.

One product (doll) that can be customized. Some items to be used are only one left.

For instance need to give an inventory of one for each of the hair. Only enough fabric to do say 2 in the fair, 3 in the sunkissed....

          Body:
          fair - 2
          sunkissed - 3
          brown - 4

          Hair:
          Pink - 1
          Blue - 1
          Brown - 1

          Eyes:
          Blue - 2
          Green - 4
          Brown -1

          blah blah blah....

Have you gone through Pamela's book or the Reference Guide yet? I'm not even clear on your question at this point.

Re: Create a product with options

No did not know about that second book. Thanks. Only had the other one. That was the point. We wanted to inventory all the attribute options. So she could use up misc odd and end stock up.

              My common sense says...

              Step 1: create product
              Step 2: add attributes
              Step 3: add options
Step 4: add inventory to each of the attribute options (not able to)

Instead step 4 is to generate variants. (which my product created 1723 variants) Then go in weed them out (each 1723) one by one and manually change inventory/add pictures. Now if you only have a couple options not so bad. But for a complicated product it is a mess.

So now trying to figure out inventory builder. Again does make sense to me why it is set up the way it is.

              Wish I could :
              Create Product
              Add attributes
              Add Options to Attributes
Then "generate products for inventory builder" option.
Which would create a product for each individual option tied to just that kit (not all possible combinations like variants does)
Then inventory could be changed for each individual product that is part kit.

Right now it appears I have to create products for each option that I will offer in inventory builder. Tying that product through kit builder to the main product. Not worked out all the details on it.

Re: Create a product with options

You don't want to generate variants in your case. As you have seen this will create every possible attribute combination. This is for when all the attributes are tied together like a red small shirt. You can't have one with out the other.

You need to use the Kit builder.

                1. Create the attributes, make sure you have it "i" column checked so you can track inventory
                2. Go to the Inventory Kit Builder tab. You should see each option listed as an individual line item. Click on a row and click edit.
                3. This will bring up a popup dialog where you can add a "part" to this option. This part is what will be used to pull inventory from.

Doing this for each option will allow you to individually track inventory on each option.

Re: Create a product with options

Having been someone who has generated a million variants in a day, I can understand the confusion. Everything you need to keep track of will first need a part number. The parts don't need to be active, but they will be used in the Kit Builder like Brennan has mentioned.

If you try to you the Inventory Variants you'll wind up count finished products, not the pieces needed to build it.
