On page 301 Redirect for Miva

Google webmaster tools is showing I have a lot of URL Errors, Mostly all 404 of products that are discontinued. What is the best way of redirecting these pages to the new product or parent category.

I have been doing 301 in my .htaccess file, but I have been warned that I don't what to overload that file because the file might get to big and slow down the site.

FYI I have about 2000 redirect to fix.

Should I add pages back and is there a way to add a 301 redirect to that page?

    Thanks

If you have toolbelt, then we have a page template script which does the redirect. All you need is a comma delimited file containing old code, new code. Installation cost incl. toolbelt is about $240.

If you have Toolkit, look at the TKSL function. It has some great code examples, too:

I have a module that manages redirects for discontinued or out-of-season products. It can generate 301 (permanent) or 302 (temporary) redirects. It provides redirection for category pages as well as products. Product codes can be redirected to a category page; so if you don't have an exact replacement for a discontinued item, you can redirect customers to a category full of similar items. The module has a text-file import feature that makes it easy to load it up with a large number of redirects. You can drop me a line by email if you're interested.

I think Kent's module should be the least demanding and inexpensive solution :o)

Kent, I have email you about your module. How do I get my hand on it.

            Thanks

It's a "semi-custom" module, not available in any of the module stores (yet). I'll follow up by email.

              Thanks --
