    HTTPS: and Google Ranking

    Hey everyone:

I am trying to play catch up here.

I have heard a few things that google is strongly suggesting that ecommerce sites use https: (instead of just http:) for basically ALL sites on ecommerce pages.

Am I understanding that right? Are we really supposed to use all secure pages now in order to have our google rankings drop?

Thanks in advance for any clarification in case I am misunderstanding this.

    Re: HTTPS: and Google Ranking

Google wants all sites to use https for all pages. They are not going to take away ranking for not being https, at least from what I've read, but they have said they may give a site a slight preference for being all-https all other things being equal. Of course they do use speed as a ranking criteria, and dynamically generated sites are always going to be slower than static, so adding https on top could potentially cause a slight penalty from the performance side; hard to know what combination would result in a net gain in ranking.
