Pre-Orders, Deposits and Layaways

With all the new great features of MM9 (and now 9.0003) is it possible to do pre-ordering of an item, take a deposit, then collect the remainder upon shipment all from within the store admin? What about layaways where a deposit is taken and payments are made on scheduled basis?

Not without some serious shoe horning. Might be worth a Wishlist post so it doesn't get missed or a discussion with Brennan and Philip if you want to try and get creative.
