Serious problem with someone trying to charge a declining card hundreds of times

This started a few days ago and it's going to get paypal, my credit card processor to dump us. PLEASE SOmeone Help!
Is there a way to only allow someone to try a few times. I used to have a module a few years ago in an older version of Miva that would not let a customer try more than a set number of times to authorize a card. MaxMind (Wolfpawhosting) has a fraud thing which we have and use, but somehow this person is getting around it and all of these declined authorizations are showing up in my Verisign/Paypal account.
We recently went to Ready Themes - not sure if that would have something to do with it.
Please try not to be too technical in your answers to me because I tend to not understand....
    Thank you
    Mike G

    * seems OK. I just noticed that the fraud alert thing is now blocking the guy from buying, but more importantly it's not going to the processor
I still welcome any insight on problems like this though.
    :-)

Yes, go to apps.miva.com and download the Checkout Recaptcha module, it will put up a recaptcha to slow them down and stop them.

Also the WolfPaw Fraud Detection module can stop this as well (but has a cost to it).

With Toolkit installed, you can block the IP address if you have access to it.

Once one the block list, the person will automatically get the store maintenance message.

I had a store go through this issue with a bot that would submit hundreds of attempts a day. I set up the MaxMind module and service with an extremely tight threshold 5% and coupled it with the Checkout Recaptcha module. I also included a very clear message to direct customer that may not be able to get past the tight tolerance to call the store to place an order.

In this case, trying to block the IP address was useless. Since it was a bot submitting the attempts, the IP address was a moving target.

I've seen the bot come back once since the MaxMind service was added. I've been able to remove the Recaptcha and move the threshold to 10%.

We experienced a similar problem. In our case it was thousands of attempts, which put us over our Payflow Pro monthly allotment, which meant it cost us hundreds of dollars. The WolfPaw module solved the problem immediately and we've had no trouble since.

            Darin,
I guess it was about a year ago when we had that problem same problem and did get several thousand attempts, so we got WolfPaw also nd everything was fine. Nice tool - but if you offer Paypal as an alternate way to pay, be careful with how it displays on the PayPal login screen that the customer sees. I spent he day yesterday investigating how I got several hundred declines that bypassed wolfpaw and that was the culprit (the paypal login screen). Apparently when a customer checks out and chooses to pay via their PayPal account, by default paypal also allows the customer to pay with their credit card. If the customer chooses that option, the credit card info etc is put in by the customer on a Paypal page, not your checkout page, so it bypasses wolfpaw. After speaking with Paypal about it, at first they told me something needed to be done on Miva's back end, but later told me the easier way which is to log into your PayPal account and turn off guest check out. I can send you exactly what the PayPal tech wrote if you feel you'd need it.

For anyone who uses Authorize.net, they offer a very robust Fraud Detection Suite for $9.95 a month. There are tons of user configurable options and we think it's well worth the price.

WolfPaw Fraud Detection module is the way to go. Not only stops multiple attempts, but will give you a level of security to help them chargebacks by denying suspicious orders across the board. I wouldn't think about running my sites without it.

Just an FYI - we are experiencing the same - and have been for months.
PayPal called us and moved us to a new system that tries to block it - but doesn't.

We have not committed to the wolfpaw module yet - but we may.

For now, we use GoSquared to track them, and without saying to much, we can open their basket and empty it - which means they have to start over. Which for now gives us a little "feel good" feeling since we are messing with them and they don't know it :-)

It seems to be working - at least its slowed them down.

I think the fraud detection module would mess with them more...certainly worth the $80...just sayin
