    inventory variant weights..

This may not be a new issue, but rather one we just realized...

When using inventory variants to control pricing display ( Variant Price is set by the Inventory Product ) what is the effect on the weight?

It appears that the base weight set in the base product is not referenced in regards to showing shipping options.
Do we need to set the actual weight OR the additional weight when using variants?

It depends on your settings, but conceptually it becomes the weight of the Variant Product.

Any chance of getting more specific - or pointing me to specific docs?

      - depends on what settings?
      - and whose concept and when does that concept kick in?
      - Does the variant weight determine UPS/FedEx/USPS, etc cost, or does it just determine what shipping options are available?
      - how does it effect free shipping in Weilands/MM's free shipping module?
      - and if we use box sizes, which weight goes into those calculations?

Without variants, it additional weight per attribute.
with variants it is? It isn't?
      - does the attribute weight have any effect on the end weight with variants?

This issue is highly important as our shipping costs have skyrocketed due to the FedEx/UPS rate increases.

The settings are located under Shipping, then Settings tab.

You can also read about them on 335 of the version 9 reference guide:

ok - so a few more questions...

A "master product" can then be EITHER a top level product (if it has _no_ variants) OR a variant?

          - item 123AB has no attributes and therefore no variants, so that weight is whats used.
          - item 555BB has attributes and inventory variants, so - those inventory variants supersede all else (they become master products).

What happens to item 111FG that has attributes but no variants?
Is it still master product PLUS attribute weight (and price)?
