Revisiting Basket Timeout / Basket Retention

What is the best way to enable the customer's basket to be retained for 48-72 hours? Does logging out of a customer account also empty the basket? I've got a couple of store owners getting complaints that customer baskets are not being retained and the shoppers are getting frustrated. I'm thinking it's just something simple that I'm overlooking. I thought I'd be lazy and ask here first before I go read the "manual".
