MM9 / Image Management / Check for updated images / Resized images questions

Not quite sure on how Image Management works in mm9. I have two instances, that are of concern that I have questions about:

    1. On the site I am working on, new images have been uploaded to the server, I've clicked the Check for Updated Images button within Image Management, and it appears that the product display page Image Type Main Image updates, but it does not look like the Category page images are updating. Does clicking that button update all images, including the resized ones? Is there some step I am missing that I should have done first like deleting resized images and then check for updated images? This is a readytheme base framework site.
    2. Plus, on another site I take care of, I can click on an image and delete the resized, and then delete the image, and I still find the resized images on the server....but it does get rid of the image that is listed in the Additional Images tab for a product. Does this not affect the images on the server for the resized images? This is a bootstrap framework site.

Maybe someone can set me straight?

    Thanks for any help,

    Jamie

    1. Perhaps something is cached? Also make sure you are updating the original un-resized image. The way it should work is when you update the original image via FTP and click "Check for Updated Images" it should replace the original image with the new one and delete all the resized images. You should be able to confirm this by looking at that image via the image management tool. It should not have any resized images.

Then the next time you visit a page where one of the resized images are used it will dynamically generate it for you, based off you new "master" image

    2. There is a separate button to delete resized, or you can always edit the master image and delete the resized individually.

      Hi Brennan,

      Thanks for the reply.

My browser is set to Check for Newer Version of Page Every Time, as well as dumping the cache when the browser closes. I'll check with the owner and make sure the ones I am seeing that are not updated were indeed done by them. That's the only thing I can figure.

Are all of the re-sized images supposed to show under Image Management? Because if I search for photo-1, that is the only photo I find. There are no re-sized images for photo-1 listed within Image Management.

      Thanks,

      Jamie

If you are looking to delete resized images no longer in use you would want to use the delete unreferenced option.
I believe it's also possible to have these remain on the server if someone has since changed the image dimensions that are set to get created.

Delete unreferenced. That must be where I was going wrong. If I had deleted the image and then deleted the unreferenced, it probably would have gotten rid of the re-sized on the server. I'll give that a whirl. That makes sense Mark. Thank you!

For some reason when I put a new image in the graphics/0000002 folder that MIVA is using I do not see it in Image Manager. I have hit the circle refresh button and the "Check for Update Images" button.

Only images uploaded via the admin are available in the the Image Manager. If you FTP'ed them to that folder they will not show up.

Would be really cool to see all the images available.

Regarding the suggestion to use "Delete Unreferenced" to remove resized images no longer in use..

I use a fake product called "Upload Image" in my store to quickly upload images via it's Legacy Image tab. (I think this was actually a suggestion I pulled from the forums in response to a request for an image uploader within the Miva admin.) I use this to upload images for landing pages, hero banners, etc so that I don't have to leave the Miva admin to upload these images via FTP.

If I were use the "Delete Unfererenced" feature to remove orphaned product images and unused product images sizes would it also delete all the images I've uploaded for use as site graphics on my landing pages, etc.? (or would those remain safely untouched since they were not uploaded via the new Images tab / Image Machine?)

I still think it would be pretty cool to have an additional Image Uploader in the admin where site images (non-product images) could be quickly uploaded to a specified folder...
