    Record Locking

I was curious if file locking is something on the horizon. We've had a few issues with multiple people making changes to the same order or product at the same time. It would be advantageous to have some safety checks for simultaneous users.

I worry about that all the time with sites that have multiple seats and employees all working on the same things. I used to try and preach only one person at a time should be making changes but how can I when multiple seats appears to be contradicting me?

While this is not a 'bad' idea per se...having multiple people work on Products IS.

I'd strongly recommend that store owners, if they have multiple resources, have those staff members add products via flat file THEN have ONE person review and import.

This recently came up internally for editing Page templates, I can see how this extends to Orders and Products too. We'll discuss it, but it's likely part of the V10 overhaul (as it naturally fits with our plans then).

That's excellent. The progression of feature (and benefit) set or Miva has really been great over the last couple years. Record locking would be a nice feature, and add a little safety net if store owners want to have a larger number of people involved inside the admin, especially if the company is spread across multiple locations, or has off site developers working in the admin. Thanks for looking at this from a customer usage perspective (orders/products/etc.) as well as the developer perspective (page templates/etc.)

But is your suggestion based upon how things are, or how they should be? Can you imagine if that's how Quickbooks operated?

I have even tried this approach. Told the store owner that I would be uploading a flat file, told them to stay out of the store while I did. Gave them plenty of warning, but I still wound up having someone some how corrupt the upload by working on a product while I was doing the upload. Yes, it was one of those extremely rare flukes, but it did happen.

Along with some sort of lockout, I'd like to see a list of whose in the admin. Of course, I have also tried to explain to store owners that it's a good practice for each person who needs to log in to have their own user name and password. But that to falls on deaf ears when a store with multiple seats has 8-10 people logging in with the same user name and password.

                Re: Record Locking

You can see who is logged in to the admin and how long it's been since they have done anything by going to the Administrative Sessions in the domain settings area. What I'd like is the ability to boot a session from the same screen... There doesn't seem to be a way to close a session through the admin, and people have a habit of locking up the sessions by forgetting to log out when they close their browser. Currently the only thing we can do is log in one of our administrator accounts, clear the extra session on login, and then log that account out...

I was thinking in terms of something on the home page, similar to how OUI used to display it in the nav tree. A quick glance type thing.

This may be a wish list type of thing... An internal instant messaging system where you can message another logged in user. Message pops up in a modal window. This could really help with many of the above issues. Espesially if you could see where other logged in users are, what pages they are viewing, in the admin.

                      Ron,

That's in our thinking too actually.

Even though Best Practice wise Bruce is right that only 1 person should be doing 1 thing at a time, the world is far more complex. Source Code control systems have effectively solved this from a paradigm perspective and we're planning on using that as a base to design from.
                      Thanks,

                        Leslie,

You might get some traction by explaining that sharing an admin login is also a security issue. Should something occur from within the admin, its going to be impossible to tell WHO did what.

Maybe an additional wish list item (and not perfect) would be a default option to bind admins to IP address.
