Syncing a POS to store inventory and vice versa

Have a store owner that is looking into using a Point of Sale system in their brick & mortar store but they need to keep their online inventory in sync with what is actually on hand in the store. The POS company has told them

...they could write a program to create exported files from their system and another program to import files from Miva to their system.
So my questions - can something like this be done? I would first assume that the file the POS system exported would have to be correctly formatted for importing. Then could it be imported via a cron?

The store is using the Viking Coders Inventory Manager which does have the ability to Import and Export the levels. I probably should also contact eMediaSales to see if they have done something like this with the module.

    Has anyone else attempted this?

    Thanks,
    Leslie

We do this all the time with our Enterprise tools (that's what they're for) if they want to automate this.

I've written a few custom modules to provide this type of hookup between a Web store and a brick-and-mortar store. Drop me a line if you'd like to discuss it in detail.
