shipping issue, how to set number of peices per box

The issue that im having is that when a customer orders a large number of products that can not fit in one box Miva is not able to distinguish this and just calculates the shipping based on one package.

For instance I sold 150 pieces of a product, but only about 80 fit in our largest box so it had to go in two boxes, 75 pieces x 2. Miva is thinking all 150 units can fit in one box so the shipping is calculated on one box. Then when we actually pack it out in our warehouse in 2 box and do the shipping, the rates are almost twice as much due to the 2 boxes vs 1.

How can i set Miva to know when a box is full and to calculate based on two boxes or more?

Check the reference guide for Box Packing module instructions www.miva.com/referenceguide

There's 3 ways to do it:

    1. Quantity per box (if you sell all the same thing this is effective, but if you sell a variety of different sized objects it's not).
    2. Weight per box (same as above, but slightly different use case)
    3. Cubic dimensions

When you use "Pack by Cubic Volume", does Miva merely translate the XYZ info for the shipping boxes and products into volumes, or does it use the actual XYZ dimensions in some way, in addition to volume, to choose the appropriate shipping box, such as longest dimension coupled with volume (seems unlikely)?

      Thanks for the info!

It does the latter. Regardless of the "pack by volume" setting, when you have product dimensions setup and Boxes configured, Miva will choose the most appropriate box based on the dimensions of the product. It will then pack this box with all the products that will "fit" into it based on the cubic volume the box allows and the cubic volume of the products. Once it reaches the max cubic volume for the box, it starts a new box.

The box dimensions and total weights are what get sent to the carrier to get rates.

This method is accurate but it still could create scenarios where mathematically the all the products can fit into a box, but in reality it is not feasible (or practical) to pack them that way and you would be required to use a larger box or multiple boxes.
