Add Product Automatically at Checkout - Shipping Weight Problem

Hello all. One of the miva sites I work on has a shipping problem. They
use stone edge order manager to import and process miva orders. They use
order manager to send order weights to shipping software where they can
purchase and print either UPS or USPS shipping labels. The problem is
that they'd like to automatically add a small amount of weight to the
order's total weight, to account for packaging. Adding weight to each
miva product is not a good plan because this added weight multiplies
when you have multiple products in 1 order, but your packaging should
    stay basically the same.

One way we think we can add a flat extra weight to the total order
weight is to automatically force add a FREE packaging product to each
checkout. The packaging product will have a weight of course. The
product would then come all the way through to order manager and show up
    when shipping labels are created.

How can we automatically add a product to each checkout? It is also
important for us to able to get this to work for ALL checkouts
containing ANY products. It would also be great to have the product
"hidden" so it is part of the basket but customers don't see it in
checkout (although I doubt this is possible). I looked far and wide for
a module to do it, and can only find "Multiple Free Products by ADVANZ
    DESIGN":

    m&Product_Code=ADVANZ-MULTFP&Category_Code=&Search=add+products&Search_T
    ype=AND&Offset=75

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to allow easy addition of the FREE
product for ALL products. Looks like we'd have to go into each 1 of the
thousands of products and turn on the free product feature.

Any suggestions on how to add a product to checkout automatically in all
cases? Any suggestions on completely different ways to try to tackle
this problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

      Hi Andrew,

We suggested this to MODSTOP several years back and they added this =
feature to their USPS module. There is a sliding scale there - from x to =
x weight, add x for packaging weight - there are probably at least 5-10 =
      rows like that.

So you can adjust your packaging weight based on the products net =
weight. Ours is very accurate now, though nothing can be perfect. I =
think Order Manager can or will be able to interface with scales which =
can send the actual weight to OM.

I had asked if Mike of Viking if he would be interested in adding this =
feature to his UPS module, but he's not doing any customization to the =
noncompiled version. If you use compiled, maybe he would do it for a =
      fee.

      Good luck!
